But when the sun rises, and the shadows draw back to reveal the monstrous hotels that line the beaches, and rows of large pink bodies start to sizzle off their hangovers, it's a far from attractive sight.

Bulgaria's once pristine coastline has largely been ruined. Despite municipal bans stating appropriate distances between beaches and hotels, and specifying the times of the year that building can take place, greedy developers keen to cash in on the huge foreign interest often build year-round, so even those who aren't offended by the existing developments are by noise and dust. But that's not to say that a trip that incorporates a few days on the Black Sea coast is without merit. Admittedly Nessebar's cobbled streets can get clogged with day-trippers, but this is just the reason to head south to the gorgeous old town of Sozopol, with its plethora of seaside restaurants -- time your visit for lunch and, mesmerized by semitranslucent twinkling sea views, you'd be forgiven for thinking you were on the Riviera. It is currently a governmental and presidential residence.

The construction of the palace began soon after the land which it occupies was given to Knyaz Alexander of Bulgaria as a present by the Greek bishopric on 16 March 1882. There had previously been small monasteries called St Demetrius and St Constantine at that place, the buildings of which were subsequently converted into another small residence.

Viennese architect Viktor Rumpelmayer designed the palace, which was named Sandrovo in 1885 after the Italian diminutive of Alexander's name — Sandro. Later the knyaz extended the estate to its contemporary area of 80 hectares.
The Unification of Bulgaria was proclaimed in Euxinograd in 1885 by Alexander, and after the knyaz's abdication the palace was bought by the state for 1,400,000 gold leva. It was eventually finished under Tsar Ferdinand, to whom the palace was awarded. He invited the Swiss architect Hermann Mayer and Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov. The palace was renamed Euxinograd in 1893 on the insistence of Knyaginya Marie Louise, Ferdinand's first wife. The name comes from the Ancient Greek term for the Black Sea, Εuξεινος Πόντος (Euxeinos Pontos, "hospitable sea") and the South Slavic suffix –grad, meaning "town" or, historically, "fortress".

Tsar Ferdinand's second wife, Tsaritsa Eleonore, died in Euxinograd on 12 September 1917.

After the abolishment of the monarchy in Bulgaria through an illegal referendum held in the presence of the Soviet army in 1946, Euxinograd became a summer residence of the then-Communist authorities. The democratic changes in 1989 made the former royal palace a presidential and governmental residence and opened it for the public.
The Euxinograd park, the arrangement of which began in 1890 and took several decades, is home to over 310 plant varieties from Asia, South America, North Africa and Southern France, said to be picked out by Ferdinand himself. It occuipies an area of over 550 decare. The park is a combination of English and French styles and was finished by Édouard André. It has two bridges, a metal one and a cement one, which imitates a felled tree. The area is surrounded by vineyards.

The tiny Kestrichka Bara River flows through the park. The park also features a small lake full of lilies, French-made bronze figures and a sculpture of Neptune. More than 50,000 trees were purchased from Marseille and fertile soil was brought from the mouth of the Kamchiya River.

Palace of culture and sports

The symbol of the Bulgarian sea capital – Varna, is the “Palace of culture and sports”, where lots of international and local sports events have taken place. The museum display consists of three sections: Geology, Vegetation and Animal kingdom. The first section deals with the formation and structure of the Earth, the origin and development of life on it. There are Mesozoic and Tertiary fossils, representing the fauna during those geological periods. Samples of ores and minerals give idea of the metalliferous and non-metalliferous minerals of Northeastern Bulgaria. In the second section one can see the basic vegetation groups along the Black sea coast: seaweeds, plants in the salt soil and sand, dense forest, etc. The animal life is represented by vertebrates and invertebrates - from unicellular to mammals. In terms of science the display is organised on the principle of evolution and provokes the discussion about various natural and scientific matters. The museum is located in the sea garden by the coast, just opposite the Palace of Culture and Sport.
Varna Terrarium

Varna Terrarium has one of the most diverse collections in Bulgaria - more than 40 different kinds of exotic animals from all over the world and many interesting and rare Bulgarian species. The display includes both vertebrates (10 kinds) and invertebrates (more than 30 kinds):

spiders

scorpions

crustacea

insects

fishes

amphibans

reptiles

small mammals

The animals are dispayed in glass terraria, aquaterraria and aquaria, in an environment similar to their natural one. The picture is enriched by 30 colour photos of animals, taken in the wilderness. The display works throughout the whole year and is dynamic - every 2 months part of the species are replaced and new ones are brought in.

Sea Gardens (Morskata Gradina)

The Sea Garden (Bulgarian: Морска градина, Morska gradina) is the Bulgarian port city of Varna's largest, oldest and best known public park. Located along the city's coast on the Black Sea, it is also an important tourist attraction and a national monument of landscape architecture.

The site where today the Sea Garden is located was until the middle of the 19th century a bare field outside the city walls. In 1862 a small garden was arranged on the orders of the city's Ottoman mayor. After the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 mayor Mihail Koloni suggested the arrangement of a city garden and a seaside park in 1881, and despite suspicions a small sum was granted. As a result the Sea Garden was expanded to 26,000 m² and further developed according to the plan of French engineer Martinice.

The person primarily associated and regarded as having done most for the garden's modern appearance is the Czech gardener Anton Novák, who had specialized at the Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. He was invited to work in Varna by his compatriot Karel Škorpil at the request of the municipality in 1894 and arrived in 1895, at the age of 35. One of Varna's best known buildings, the Varna Aquarium, was constructed in the garden in 1906–1911.

During his time in Varna Novák did an immense work: he radically rearranged the garden and ordered the planting of valued plants from the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. His contract with the municipality was extended in 1899, when he was built a house still standing next to the entrance to the garden. The garden gradually grew to reach 90,000 m² in 1905. Several fountains were added in 1912–1913, as well as partially electric lighting. The central alley was decorated with monuments of prominent Bulgarians by a special committee. The seaside casino was built in the 1930s and acquired its modern appearance after a reconstruction in 1960–1961.

The 1930s saw the planting of species from the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic and France, as well as the construction of nursery gardens. The garden was expanded to the south to reach the house of the Italian consul Assaretto, today the Varna Naval Museum. The garden reached its present borders in the 1950s and the trees in the centre of the central alley were substituted with flower beds in the 1960s, which thus reached 20,000 m² in the entire Sea Garden. In 1939, the architect Georgi Popov designed the garden's modern central entrance with a wide plaza and tall columns.

An Alley of Cosmonauts was arranged in the 1960s, with the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin planting the first plant, a silver fir, on 26 May 1961 before a large crowd. The Pantheon of the Perished in the Fight Against Fascism was erected in the same year. The Observatory and Planetarium were opened in 1968 on the site of the old open-air theatre and the Varna Zoo was inaugurated in 1961. A swan-shaped sundial was installed in front of the main entrance. The present open-air theatre, flanked by the Alpineum and the children's amusement park, is the venue of the Varna International Ballet Competition since its inception in 1964, and the dolphinarium was erected in 1984. Recently, the Exotic Zoo terrarium was added.

The Roman Thermae

Located in the Southeastern part of modern Varna, the Roman Thermae were built upon more than 7000 sq.m. and used to be the largest antic public building in Bulgaria. The architectural style and some discovered coins provide information that the construction work took place in the end of the second - beginning of the third century AC. During the relatively peaceful second century Odessos grew into a major economical and cultural centre of the Black Sea coast and the Roman province Moesia Inferior. Close to the end of the century the blossoming city could afford the enormous construction and maintenance operations. The daily life of the Roman citizens included visits to the baths called thermae. They were also equipped with gymnastics and sport halls, called palaestras, meeting and discussing halls, relaxation room, etc. In addition to the indoor hall, the thermae had a featured real palaestra - a big yard, surrounded with columns and shops. The palaestra is in the north part of the baths and stair lead from it to the main hall.

The building of the Roman thermae was designed symmetrically, and the arrangement of the rooms follows the recommendation of the Roman architect Vitrivius. Thus, the warm rooms face south, and in the middle of the southern facade is the caldarium - the hot water bath. The two entrances can be found on the northern side of the thermae. Wide stairs lead to the lobbies - with the purpose of preventing the cold air from the dressing rooms. The dressing rooms (apoditeria) on the other hand were large enough to fit all visitors and provide comfort. This is where the slaves would stay and keep the clothes and jewels while the citizens of Odessos enjoy the baths.

The highest preserved part of the thermae - the Roman tower was one of the walls of the western apoditeria. The first phase of the bath procedure was the so called "short bath" - the visitors went through the frigidarium (hall with cold baths), tepidarium (warm bath) and eventually got ready for the main hot bath in the caldarium. It includes one spacious pool and two smaller along the walls - all three of them receiving water from the boiler halls. Those citizens, who were willing to enjoy "the full program", continued to the actual tepidarium, and eventually in the actual frigidarium. In this way the body was refreshed and prepared to go back to the cold baths' halls. All halls were located so that the simultaneous enjoying of the baths by men and women would be prevented.

In order to perform their functions, the baths are equipped with the necessary devices and rooms. In the southern part was located the prefurnium - that is where the water and air for the baths were heated up. The warm rooms are featured for their double floor. The upper surface is constructed upon vertical columns. The hot air circulates between them and warms up the floor. The rooms are heated in the same way from the air, transmitted between the walls and the marble surface.

Along the east and west walls we can find the passages, used as wood stock rooms, and in the southern end was the bathroom. A few shops for the visitors were located on the level above the passages. In the northern end, a huge water container was utilized, from which the water would flow towards the boiler room. Afterwards, ceramic pipes take the water to the sinks and the pools. The outgoing foul water canals were built in under the floors. Their disposition brings the foul water into the sea.

The building itself was about 20 meters high (the preserved part of it nowadays - the Roman tower is 18 m high), constructed from both stones and bricks. The outer walls and the halls were decorated with marble columns, ornaments and other architectural elements. Another feature is the number of statues of distinguished citizens and Roman gods, built up together with the needed fountains. The social and political crisis from 3rd century caused damages in the Roman Empire and Odessos, as a part of it. The maintenance of the baths became very expensive and they gradually left without good care. The stone material and decorative elements were taken and used for the construction of other buildings, including the small baths of Odessos from 6th century.

Special thanks to Milena Minkova for the translation of this page.

The Ethnographic Museum

The Ethnographic museum was opened in 1974 in a restorated house from the National Revival period, built around 1860. Due to the initiative of Maria Nikolova - ethnographer, Assen Stoychev - artist and Kamen Goranov - architect, the creation of the exposition was possible. The museum reflects the rich material and cultural heritage of the local population during the second half of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century - catering, crafts, clothes, jewellery, ritual bread, "survachki" (special colour folded sticks, decorated with pop-corns, candies, ribbons, used by children on the first day of the New Year to tap neighbours on the back, wishing them good health, happiness, success in the new year)...
The national customs - Christmas, Kamili(Camels), Petlyovden (Cock's day), Lazaruvane, wedding are presented in a rather interesting way. A special corner is preserved for a luxurious city home from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century - a vestibule, drawing room, bedroom, kitchen. The amazing tour ends with a story about the commercial life of old Varna and a panoramic view of the town. The Ethnographic museum is a perfect place for temporary topical exhibitions.

The Assumption Cathedral

In the very first years following the Liberation of the country the Orthodox Bulgarian population in Varna increased rapidly. To confirm their close ties with Russian Orthodox faith and to manifest their separation from Greek Patriarchate, on his first visit to the town prince Dondukov-Korsakov was invited by the local municipality members to attend the official religious service at the Bulgarian St. Archangel Mikhail church. He was, however, disappointed with the state of the temple and declared that the town deserved an impressive church, the only one of its kind in the country. And he was ready to help. Soon a committee was elected and its task was to choose the place and raise the funds for the construction. The financial aspect was settled through donations, lottery and a governmental loan. The town's surrounding area offered building materials - hewn stones in good shape from the already ruined fortress were used in the construction process. Copper sheet plates from England, supplied by Velichko Hristov, were used for the roof of the church. Two lifting cranes for the heavy stone blocks were also shipped from England.

The honour to lay the main stone of the future temple fell to prince Alexander I Batenberg who arrived to Varna on 4th August. The official ceremony took place on 22nd August 1880. The chosen name Uspenie Presvyatiya Bogoroditzi (the Assumption) was to commemorate the recently deceased all-Russian empress Maria Alexandrovna - a Bulgarian benefactress and aunt of the prince. The initially chosen municipal construction site (in the park below the clock tower) did not appeal to the prince. "His Majesty chose for that purpose the area behind the attendance halls, facing the barracks on the one side and the hospital on the other, between the new hamlet and the town of Varna". At those days that was the end of the town. "The site chosen for the above-mentioned temple is actually a very wide area which allows for a garden around the temple. This area rises above the town and presents a good view over the entire town, the railroad, several villages, the port and the Black Sea to a vast and boundless expanse…" No time was wasted and the building works started right away. It took 6 years for the temple to be completed. The project imitated the style of the Peterhoff temple in Petersburg. The church was planned to reach the size of 35 x 35 metres, with a three-nave basilica, the main altar dedicated to the Assumption, the northern one - to the faithful prince St. Alexander Nevsky, the southern - to St. Nicholas the Wonder-Worker.
It was in the summertime when the question about the choice of expert master-builders was discussed. Negotiations with the most famous master Kolyu Fitcheto from Tarnovo proved not efficient and the direction of the construction works was temporarily assigned to the Varna master Vassil Ivanov. Finally, after a long search for an appropriate architect, the choice fell on master Yanko Kostandi whose works included also the building of St. Nicholas Church. On 15th March 1884 the committee assigned the construction to the prominent church-builder Gencho Kanev from Tryavna. The following year the temple was already erected, in September the roofing was finished and on 30th August 1886 the first solemn mass was celebrated there. However, the design of its interior continued throughout the following years. The bishop's stall was placed in 1897; later on the iconostasis was also ready. Towards the end of 1890 the board decided that "there is no need for a separate structure for which 30000 levs will be spent; instead, the dome can be raised so that the bell will be heard throughout the town". The bell was supposed to weigh 1638 kg, with an inscribed text that read: In honour of the Liberator. In 1901 the Russian czar Nicolay II presented 42 smaller and 3 bigger icons, and in 1904 other 8 icons were brought to the church to be placed at the middle and northern doorways. In 1911 the church flooring was covered with multicoloured ceramic tiles. 4 years later the balcony was ready. In 1941-43 the bell-tower (38 m high) and the cupolas were reconstructed to their present form, the steam-heating room was built, the roofing structure replaced. The temple was icon-painted in the years following 1949; the chandeliers were also installed at that time.

In the 1960s stained glass windows were placed: the southern ones (those facing the square) depicted the images of the authors of the Cyrillic alphabet St. Cyril and St. Methodius, and the northern windows - their followers St. Clement and St. Angelarii. The spring of 2000 revealed a new image of the cathedral - the patina-covered copper domes were refreshed with golden paint. Located in the very centre of Varna, the present-day Cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in the city. A religious temple for the citizens, a must-see for the tourists, the cathedral is one of the symbols of Varna. Once you overcome the 133 narrow winding steps of the bell-tower you will be rewarded by the magnificent view over the town.

Varna Archaeological Museum

The inauguration of the Varna Archaeological Museum and its further development is closely connected with the names of the two brothers Herman and Karel Škorpil, Czechs by origin, who came to help with the education and culture of their sister Slavonic nation following the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish Yoke. In 1894 they permanently settled in Varna. On 12 December 1901, a group of socially active figures and teachers established the Varna Archaeological Society that for decades since has been the basic motivating power for interest and study in the history of Varna, Varna Region, and Northeast Bulgaria. The inauguration of an archaeological museum was a task of prime importance for the Society. On June 11, 1906 the first exhibition of the Museum was officially opened in a room of the Girls’ High School. Karel Škorpil was elected as director of the Museum and remained in that post till his death in 1944.

In 1945 the Varna Archaeological Museum was declared to be state property, and Mr. M. Mirtchev became the new director. In 1952 the exhibition was moved into aschool building on 5 Sheinovo St. specially granted to the Museum. Its rich collections and strong traditions of research and collective work proved to be the helped for creating other museums in Varna, such as the Navy Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Museum of the Bulgarian Revival, etc.

Since 3 March 1983, the Museum has been accommodated in the present building – the only one offering complete possibilities for exhibiting and preserving its riches. Throughout its existence of over 120 years, archaeologists members of the Varna Archaeological Museum or employed at the Archaeological Museum have constantly carried out archaeological investigations and excavations on various sites all over Northeast Bulgaria. The Varna Archaeological Museum now holds over 100,000 various objects of the region's past epochs.

How to fly to Varna and Hotels in Varna
